Edmond Jouhaud

The general Edmond Jouhaud , born in 1905 with Bou Sfer, with a score of kilometers of Oran, (Algeria), died with Royan in 1995, was a air General. He made a brilliant career in the air force before taking part in the putsch of Algiers in April 1961 which was worth a death sentence to him.

  • He was the youngest child of a family of six children, descendant of a line of Alsatian-Lorraine benches in Algeria in 1848

  • He made his primary studies with Oran then obtained the baccalaureat with the college Lamoricière d' Oran.

Military career

  • 1926 : entered the air force at its exit of Saint-Cyr military school, it is detached at the practical School of aviation then affected to the 358e regiment of Aviation; it is promoted lieutenant at twenty three years in 1928.
  • Starting from 1930, it is useful during two years in aviation in AOF
  • In 1935, it is promoted captain and is useful again in AOF.
  • the May 24th 1938, it is allowed at the University of air war.
  • on September 3rd, 1939 (the day of the declaration of war), it is promoted commander and affected with the staff ordering the North-eastern air forces and anti-aircraft terrestrial forces, then it receives various assignments.

  • 1940 : captive fact, it escapes, enters the Résistance under the orders of the general Revers, chief of the Organization of resistance of army (ORA);

  • 1944 : recalled in activity, it is affected with the staff with the 6th subdivision takes the command of the air group special 1/36.

  • 1948 : it is called with the command of the air force in Tunisia.

  • on December 25th, 1944: promoted lieutenant-colonel;

  • the 1946: promoted colonel;
  • the March 10th 1949: promoted brigadier general, it orders the tactical air forces in North Africa;
  • 1954 : promoted major general and named ordering air force in the Far East;

  • February 1st, 1955: appointed chief of staff of the forces of the air force, (high position in the air force).
  • 1956 : promoted air lieutenant-general, it takes the command of Ve Région air to Algiers;

  • 1958 : promoted general air, it is named chief of staff, then general inspector of the air force;
  • on October 15th, 1960: put of availability at its request, it leaves the army definitively.

Participation in the putsch of Algiers

  • 1961 : with the generals Maurice Shawl, Raoul Salan and Andre Zeller, it is one of the four organizing generals of the putsch to Algiers from April 22nd to 25th;
  • 1962 : after the failure of the putsch, he becomes the chief of the secret armed Organization (OAS) in Oran IE, he is stopped on March 25th and is condemned to dead on April 13rd by the High military Tribunal; after seven months spent in a cell of condemned to death, he escapes from very little from the execution, the Général de Gaulle acceptor of the gracier on November 28th, probably because Salan, the chief of the insurrection itself had not been condemned to death; its sorrow is commuted to detention with perpetuity;
  • 1967 : it leaves the prison of Tulle in December. It will profit from the amnesty in July 1968;
  • 1969: elected official chair National front of the repatriates.
  • 1982 : rehabilitation within the frameworks of the army.
