Biography

When Edmond-Marie Poullain unloads in Paris in 1903 to make her right there, it is more anxious to carry out its artistic ambition. He is registered at the school of the fine arts, but he will prefer the evenings of to him the Feather , the literary review directed by Karl Boès, with the Caveau of the gold Sun, Place Saint-Michel.

In these evenings meetings of writers and young artists are organized. It is in this place that are found the majority of those which one will call later the band with Picasso.

Very attracted by this existence new and coveted long time, which releases it from the parental yoke, Edmond-Marie Poullain, of the bar of the Jean Father, with the Closerie of the Lilacs (or it meets Picasso and Paul Fort) while passing by the Bateau-Lavoir, valley great friendships that one knows to him, especially with Guillaume Apollinaire, max Jacob and André Salmon.

In its workshop of the Street of the Seine, in 1904, Poullain outlines the portrait of Apollinaire, a quite curious portrait with moustache (it carried out two other portraits, of which one with the charcoal which is with the Museum of Stavelot in Belgium). It is in this workshop, then later in those of the Rue of Ravignan and the Rue Countryside-First that Poullain likes to receive his/her friends at the time of artistic evenings to which take share of not very savage young women, and where one speaks about painting and poetry. André Salmon told as nobody can better do it in his Souvenirs without ends , which was the meetings in the workshop of Foal, characters like Mécislas Golberg, the painter Edvard Diricks, Nicolas Deniker, Arne Hammer, Jean Mollet says the “baron”, the Catalan sculptor Manolo Hugué and some others. In 1905, it meets Matisse.

Very early, Edmond-Marie Poullain perceives the danger which the cubism represents, so opposite with its painting that it feels threatened. Then it gives up the adventure, flees Paris one day of 1906, taking refuge with deepest of its ancestral Normandy with Vauville. Registering its painting in an enthusiastic regionalism, suffering of its insulation, he regrets these privileged moments of its youth and the “band in Picasso”.

Of 1907 with 1919, he is lawyer with Valognes. It is named Justice of the Peace in 1919.

In 1911, one stops Guillaume Apollinaire which one shows to be at the origin of the flight of the Mona Lisa . Contrasting with the attitude of Picasso, Poullain supports his/her friend Guillaume, locked up with the Prison of Health. It uses then of its legal talent to comfort the poet. Entrusting, Apollinaire delivers to him certain confidences in letters of prison.

It is in 1925 that André Salmon and Fernand Fleuret moves in the painter with Bréhal and go together to the Fair Lessay to find Louis Beuve.

In 1942, it enters the French interior Résistance, integrated into the Marland network. In 1946, it will accommodate at his place André Salmon, condemned to one five years period of national unworthiness (judgment very quickly amnestied).

He will marry Odette Cabart-Danneville with whom he will have two children, Marie-Odette in 1922 who will marry Ralph Messac and Marthe in 1923.

Edmond-Marie Poullain did not claim to be a great painter but it was aware of its talent. He had not learned painting, he had it in him.
