Editions the Farandole
The editions the farandole , were a publisher specialized in the literature of childhood and youth. Having the statute of public limit company, it raised of the leading group of the French Communist party, nevertheless with an autonomy which enabled him to publish extremely various authors. Created with the last quarters 1955, " the farandole" a reputation of serious in its production had acquired, from which many works were distinguished by selections the such Diploma Young Leisures. Included in 1979-1980 in the reorganizations of the leading group of the PCF, the publisher takes then the name of Messidor the farandole. The whole of the group gathered the social editions, famous current Temps, the editions Vaillant Mirror Sprint, the literary editions Messidor, in the past the brought together French editors directed by Louis Aragon, and Messidor the farandole. Become Scanéditions in 1992, the group was put in liquidation in 1994. The editions " the farandole" disappeared after 39 years from existence and left a vacuum, that no one did not fill, in the field of the literature for youth.
notes of situation
places
During their creation the editions the farandole had domiciled 3, Cour the commercial Saint Andre, a passage to the paving stones disjoined between the Saint-Germain boulevard and the Rue Saint-Andre-of-Arts, in the 6th Parisian district. The room included/understood a ground floor from which the old window was protected the evening come by removable wood shutters, and a first exiguous stage because the whole was contiguous at the restaurant " Procope" , whose frontage gave on the Rue of the Old-Comedy. The ground floor was reserved for commercial, accountancy, forwardings, the store of reserve, the files. The first stage, cut into 4/5 offices, was used for the literary production, artistic and technical and sheltered the small directorial office. Through the partitions one heard the bustle in the kitchens of the multiséculaire restaurant… Opposite a iron work in its workshop a remainder of the ramparts of Philippe-Auguste included. In the same course, certain Doctor Guillotin had designed an instrument intended to soften the sufferings of condemned to death. From 1955 to 1975, it is in this out of date decoration of Paris of the Eighteenth century, that the personnel of this small house of edition affairait itself, which employed (in 1972) just ten paid people, but whose catalog offered more than 250 titles, of which some competed easily with leading competition. The enlarging of the restaurant, and a lease at the too high price forced a first removal, 11 bis rue de la Planche, in the 7th district. It was only temporary. About 1979, the editions the farandole left left bank of the Seine to settle 146 rue du Faubourg - poissonnière, in a building which gathered all the components of the editions Messidor.
the company
The beginning of the year 1970, the direction, entirely female, was ensured by a duet: a director " stratégique" , Paulette Mr., of which he thought that she was the partner of Jean Jerome, occult eminence of the PCF, and a literary and commercial, professional director of the edition, Régine Lilenstein They were assisted by two " techniciennes" edition, in addition various authors with title: Madeleine Gilard, in charge particularly of the reading with the manuscripts, translator of tales and itself author of several books for children, and Jacqueline Mathieu, model maker of talent, which took part in the design of the majority of the great new productions of the publisher, such the Treasury of the Man , the Man of all the colors , signed by Pierre Paraf, the Resistance written by Pierre Durand or My ancestors the redskins , of William Camus. Later, it also launched out in the illustration of tales for children, published by the house.
diffusion
Public limit company, its capital was 350.000 francs in the years 1960, before being carried with 500.000 francs in 1973. That translated the dynamism of this structure, of which a network of principals, teachers, persons in charge municipal with childhood and work's councils ensured a voluntary promotion, related to the " progressisme" leading production. In fact, the distribution of the editions the farandole was ensured by the CDLP Center of diffusion of the book and the press, like the other editions of the PCF. The advantages of this diffusion of the type at the same time militant and commercial however were negatively counterbalanced by a certain ostracism whose often made proof childish literary criticism with regard to this editor classified " on the left ". Especially, the diffusion by CDLP limited the space of diffusion and hardly the access of the editions the farandole opened to the networks of the traditional booksellers. Fault of being better known and more largely put at range of its potential public, the leading production could not play equal footings with the publications intended for youth exits of the large editors.
leading principles
to make known the Soviet and socialist literature for childhood
During their creation, the editions the farandole had as a speciality the translation and the diffusion of the abundant literature for the childhood and the youth of the Soviet Union. The volume which carries number 1 of the editor is a translation made by Natha Caputo of Contes written by Maxime Gorki. Volume number 2 is addressed to the same age bracket, 7 to 10 years, but in spite of its title, the pink of Karpathes , its author is a French writer Pierre Gamarra, which was in addition critical arts person of the weekly magazine of CGT, the working Life , before he becomes director of the review Europe . Gamarra, also novelist for adults was one of the most faithful authors of the farandole during its existence, since it published ten titles there. Its first book whose copyright is of 1955 makes it possible to encircle one of the characteristics of the editions the Farandole: the recourse to good illustrators to accompany the texts. There it is about Mireille Miailhe, which it also starts a profitable collaboration with the publisher. As for the lines which conclude this Rose from Karpathes , delivers unceasingly republished, it summarizes the orientation of the editions the farandole: " I will say to you now which was this rose tree with the so powerful arms. It was the rose tree of Freedom, do not forget it. Its seed pushes in the middle of the men and the women, the girls and the boys. When it grows, its arms are stronger than the walls of the prisons and the castles, more extremely than the winds of the storm and the désert" . The diffusion of the literature of the European East, of which the rights for Russian were managed by a company of communist mobility, the literary and artistic Agency Parisian (ALAP), was not limited to the USSR.
co-operation with the East-German, Polish and Czech editions
Certain collections result from the co-operation between the editions the farandole and the editors of State of Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and especially of German Democratic republic. Agreements of translation, diffusion and impression between it and the " Kinderbuchverlag" make it possible the catalog editions the farandole to propose a broad choice of very modern (in the sense that the history is in the everyday life of the children of the 20th century) literature for the youth of GDR. The same step was made with the Polish childish editions. With this difference however: the author is French, Isabelle Jan, Marie-Zéline Sadoul, Andrée Clair, Madeleine Dubois, Madeleine Gilard, the draftsmen are Polish. With the Artia editions of Prague, it is about literature scientists of popularization of which one of works knows several republications: the Encyclopedia of prehistory of Zdenek V. Spinar, illustrated by Zdenek Burian.
French production
Minority the first years, the French authors and illustrators quickly enlarged the catalog of the editions the farandole. They are French authors for adults who write tales for children. Thus volume n° 21 published in 1956 is a resumption of tales written by Paul Valiant-Dressmaker before war: poor History of ass and fatty pig. In 1967, Bernard Clavel is delivered to the same exercise, with the Tree which sings . Armand Lanoux delivers a Dagobert and rusted anchors. As from the years 1960, the French authors occupy the first place thanks to the emergence of authors specialized in the literature of youth: in addition to those already quoted, one meets the names of Luda, Rene Antona, Georges Nigremont, Colette Vivier, Jean Olivier, in addition authors of Cartoons, André Verdet, Madeleine Bellet, Juliette Darle, Maurice Jean, Jean Garonnaire, Bernadette Després, Pierre Menanteau, Jacques Cassabois, etc
a literature " engagée" ?
The production went from the album of ten robust hard-bound pages for the " more than 2 ans" with the novels of adventures for the " more than 14 ans". For the oldest some authors have known stature: Howard Fast, Ludwig Renn, Gianni Rodari, Valentine Kataiev, Leon Tolstoï or Charles Darwin… the editions the farandole also resort to the great classics of the literature: the Island with the treasures of Robert Louis Stevenson, Tom Sawyer , Fine Huckleberry , of Mark Twain, Don Quichotte of Cervantès. the Oak speaking and the Masters mosaïstes about Georges Sand côtoient the adventures of the Roman Fox or those of Robin of Wood. Gargantua and Pantagruel of Rabelais, Don Quichotte of Cervantès, the cricket of the hearth of Charles Dickens are also with the catalog. The pallet was broad and the contemporary authors tended with the passing of years to being increasingly more numerous, exceeding communist mobility by far. It was a literature laic, humanistic, preaching the values of solidarity, as well on the level of the books of tales, very many and very international, as on the level of the stories for largest. the farandole was located in the filiation of Jean Macé, principal, author of tales for children and founder of the Ligue of teaching: in 1957 didn't, republish a book of this pedagog, Four tales of the Small Castle ? It was also on the occasion a literature of engagement in the contemporary world. During the war of Algeria, for example, the farandole publishes E 1959 for submission to small French a book of tales of Algeria, Baba Fekrane , of Mohammed Dib. The illustrator in is once again, Mireille Miailhe. International reporter to Humanity Madeleine Riffaud trancrit in 1958, in the so extraordinary cat of the tales of the Vietnam. In 1971, whereas the war makes rage, is published the Treasury of the Man , tales and images of Vietnam. Model by Jacqueline Mathieu, with photographs of Roger Peak, Marc Riboud, Jean Bertolino, documents provided by Georges Boudarel and Charles Fourniau this book is selected by various jurys children's book: there took to seat some worms of the poet-leader Ho Chi Minh. In catch on the history, written for the " more than 10 ans" , the novels of Pierre Gamarra, Bertrand Solet often refer to Resistance. Madeleine Gilard, in Ali and its buddy promotes, for an age bracket younger, the fraternity of the children of any origine. In the years 1980 one of the collections of the publisher aims at providing to the young readers data elements on the topicality. Thus the journalist Francoise Germain-Robin writes a book on Algeria, bound for the young French-speaking people of two banks of the Mediterranean.
beautiful books
An great attention was put at the illustration, with the page layout. In this respect the volumes of poetry published between 1975 and 1985, " It was once… " are successes of the kind. Certain illustrators work with several volumes of the editions the farandole, like Rene Moreu, others with only one, but they constitute a troop where one finds talents varied: thus in 1955, for volume N° 6 of the editions, a Russian tale of Iouri Olecha, the three malicious large , one finds as illustrator, Jacques Faizant. Among others, it is necessary to quote Jacques Kamb, Jacques Naret, Paul Tillard, Béatrice Tanaka, Jacqueline Held, Jacqueline Mathieu,…Catalogued beautiful books by the same editions, some among those could interest an assistantship having exceeded the course of youth.
- Resistance , Pierre Durand, leaves at the time of the 30e birthday the Release. In addition to the text and a sought iconography, it is accompanied in its original edition by 1974, by a small flexible long-playing record, where one intends Paul Éluard to read his famous poem " Liberté" . This book is then republished with the format " poche".
- the man of all the colors, racism… why? of Pierre Paraf, prefaced by the director of UNESCO Rene Maheu, with the same format of 22 X 29,5 is of the same pagination of 230 pages, is crowned in 1973 of the " price Jean Macé" allotted by the " League of Enseignement".
- My ancestors the Redskins , delivered by William Camus, is at the same time history of the Indians of the United States of America and testimony of a descendant of an Indian tribe.
some other productions
books accompanied by discs
The editions the farandole tried one moment, in connection with the music publishings the Song of the world, to twin disc-microgrooves and delivers tales. Thus known actors recited the children, the tales of India, the tales of Persia or the tales of Black Africa which they could read in the albums. It does not seem that the experiment was a success. On the contrary, associating music and account, one of the leading products of the two editors were the famous Pierre and the wolf , of Serge Prokofiev, accompanied by the text called by the actor Gerard Philippe.
books of scientific popularization
In 1957-1958, the editions the farandole tried also a diversification, without following days, by publishing books for young adults. Little known and little sold, they remained with the catalog until the years 1974-1975. In this collection entitled " To know and connaître" , five books were published in the pocket format. Thus was published the book of the doctor Fernand Lamaze, introducer in France of this method of setting in the world: Is What what the painless childbirth? . Also a book of the scientific chronicler Lucien Barnier appeared: the unknown ground-planet, the geophysical year. But bound for a young public the collection will perdura, calling upon specialists in their discipline.
