Editions of Montsouris

The Editions Montsouris are a Publisher created at the end of the XIXe century whose serialized stories were an important success.

Today this editor ceased his activity.

In 1965 the Montsouris Editions still published, and with a great success, reviews like: l' Echo of Mode, Rustica , Mon Madame Work, Smoothing iron , Pierrot, 4 saisons, Mes romans and Coq Hardi.

Ten years later all had disappeared, at the same time as was absorbed the company for which this press had been made. In 1880, when Charles Huon de Penanster launched the Small Echo of the Mode , it was addressed to a public in full expansion: the mothers who could read and who had a little time to distract themselves but not to play Mrs Bovary. It is the continuation of this silent revolution which Michelet had noticed in 1842 with the vertiginous fall in the price of fabrics:

“Large is the ambition of the woman for the household, clothing, the linen. This last article is new; l' cupboard with the linge which makes the pride of the woman of countryside was unknown with that of the workman of the cities, before the industrial revolution about which I spoke. Cleanliness, purity, decency, these graces of the woman, enchanted the house; the bed wrapped curtains, the cradle of the child, dazzling whiteness, became a paradise. The cut whole, bent in some days before… There add still a flower on crossing. What a surprised! the man, with the return, does not recognize any more his house.

This taste of the flowers which was spread (there are now here several markets of them), this small expenditure to decorate the interior, aren't they regrettable, when one never knows if there is work tomorrow? - Known as step expenditure, known as economy. It is quite large, if the innocent seduction of the woman makes this house charming to the man, and can retain there. Let us avoid, I request from you, the house and the woman itself. A few ells of Indian remake another woman, here it is the become again young person and renewed. ”

It is another revolution which takes place later forty years with the appearance of the women's magazines intended for the housewife. It is characteristic that pulling passes from 5.000 to 100.000 specimens after the insertion of a serialized story: it is not a large book which could try the housewife at the expense of her work, and, printed at the same time on detachable and applicable pages, it could be preserved even lent. In 1893, after the encartage of a free owner, it is a jump more than 200.000 specimens. The free owner compensating for the remorse which one had while spending for the review.
