Editions of “With the research of wasted time”

This article describes the various editions of To the research of time lost , novel of Marcel Proust, currently available in France. It also draws up a correspondence of the numbers of page between the editions: thus, simple a Rule of three will be enough to roughly deduce the numbers from page from one edition to another.

We present to you below a table of correspondence between the various editions of the Recherche of time lost , as well as a method of calculating. There exists also a program on line, the Proust Converter, which carries out these calculations automatically.

Method of calculating of the correspondences

To find a number of page announced in the edition has in the edition B, it is necessary to make following calculation:

$\ frac {Apage-Adebut} {So-Adebut} \ times (Bfin-Bdebut) + Bdebut$

where:

Apage indicates the number of the page in the edition has (the value to find correspondent with “ Bpage ”);
Adebut and Bdebut , So and Bfin respectively indicates the pages of beginning and of end of the editions has and B.

For example, we will seek in the collections Bouquins (our edition B) the correspondence of page 65 of In the shade of the young girls in flowers 2 in the collection Garnier-Flammarion (our edition A). One thus has:

Apage = 65 (the page which interests us in the starting edition);
Adebut = 7 (the first page of volume in the starting edition);
So = 356 (the last page of volume in the starting edition);
Bdebut = 533 (the first page of volume in the edition of arrival);
Bfin = 769 (the last page of volume in the edition of arrival).

The value that we seek is Bpage (the page which interests us in the edition of arrival). One must thus calculate:

$\ frac {65-7} {356-7} \ times (769-533) + 533 = 572$

The passage that I seek must be around page 572 in the Bouquins edition.
