Edith Cresson , born the January 27th 1934 with Boulogne-Billancourt, is a political woman French. It is the only woman to have reached the station of Prime Minister in France of the May 15th 1991 with the April 2nd 1992. It also had the the shortest mandate of the Fifth Republic
Youth
His/her father, Gabriel Campion (1896-1959), left high bourgeoisie of tendency SFIO, is tax inspector. Detached with the embassy of France with Belgrade under the Mode of Vichy, he becomes then director of finances of the national help then president of the French company of bank and deposits.She married Jacques Cresson, wire of doctor and director of the export of Peugeot, with which she has two girls.

At the time of the municipal elections of 1977, it is elected mayor of Thuré (commune of the suburbs of Châtellerault). One year later, it fails at the time of an partial cantonal election, it is victim of a bad carryforward of communist voices. The same year, it is beaten with legislative by Jean-Pierre Abelin but it will beat it in 1981 and 1988. At the time of its passage to the government it reinforces its local position, being elected general adviser in 1982 (re-elected in 1988 and 1994) then mayor of Châtellerault in 1983 (re-elected in 1989 and 1995) where his/her principal collaborators will be Gilbert Guérineau, Rene Croiset and Dominique Mallay.
Governmental functions
- It is the first woman to see itself entrusting the ministry for Agriculture in the Mauroy government in 1981. It is very badly accommodated by the FNSEA whose leaders consider that the nomination of a woman testifies to the " contempt " in their connection.

It resigned of the government Rocard, because of its dissensions with the Prime Minister. It partly owes with that its nomination with the head of the government, in addition to its obvious new character. As a Prime Minister, it is at the origin of the transfer of the National school of administration to Strasbourg.
