Colony

Edina started as a part of the town of Richfield. In the Années 1850, 17 families, the majority immigrating because of the great famine of Ireland, came to the Minnesota and asserted territories of the south-western section of what was at the time Richfield Village. They were followed by farmers English and Scottish, which asserted other territories close to Minnehaha Creek. The districts Baird and Grimes and County Club are located in the north-eastern part of Edina and were the first areas with being founded.

In 1888, the residents of the colony held a meeting to take into account the foundation of a new village, thus separating from Richfield Village. The idea was accepted favorably by the members of the community and a committee was established to deal with this transition.

Name

After the decision to form a new village was made, a debate followed concerning the name of this new village. Several meetings of village took place in Minnehaha Grange Hall, where the names " Hennepin Park" , " Westfield" , and " Edina" were proposed. Notes taken by Henry F. Brown, a farmer and future owner (1889) of the Mill of Edina (Edina Millet), are summarized as follows:

a long debate was followed from there concerning the name which the corporation was to carry. A movement had been formed to take again in consideration the vote taken with the preceding meeting concerning the name of the future village, Westfield . Another movement had been formed then by Andrew Craik to call the future Edina village (while moving in 1869 since Edinburgh, it bought and re-elected the mill in Edina Mill). After the movement could decide, James A. Bull, a member of the committee of five people, formed another movement to defer, which was assisted by the majority. But the president of the meeting qualified this movement of illegitimate, and a disorder was followed from there where Baird, Wilson, Ryan and Bulls declared their intention not to more want to be members of the committee if a minority decision were to be taken. During this impassioned moment, the meeting became somewhat chahuteuse until, after a few minutes, the order was restored. Indicator which work could not be made at this hour, a final movement had passed to defer the meeting with a latter date.

The next morning, the name Edina was finally selected with a vote of 47 for and 42 against.

Edina today

Today, much of the street names of Edina are selected after those of the families whose Ferme S used the area.

The inhabitants of Edina are considered rich (e.g the median of income by household with Edina in 1999 of 66.019 dollars was compared with 37.974 for Mineapolis and 47.111 for the state of the Minnesota), which carried out some to call them the " cake eaters" (meaning the " eaters of gâteau"). This formerly pejorative expression is a reference to the quotation " That they eat brioche" of Marie-Therese of Austria (although much allots the quotation to Marie-Antoinette of Austria), and is often used today in the slogans in the sporting competitions of the area. Its use can be seen, for example, in film of Disney The Mighty Ducks , where the expression is used in reference to the character Adam Banks, who comes from Edina.

Although Edina counts some Milliardaire S in these inhabitants, most known being Richard Mr. Schulze and Carl Pohlad, Edina has a population of all the levels of multitude (e.g. 3,3% of the population of Edina lived under the poverty line in 1999).
