Edge off Sanity
Edge off Sanity is a group of Death metal Swedish founded in 1990 per the singer, beater and multi-instrumentalist daN Swanö and the bass player/guitarist Andreas Axelsson.
After having recruited the bass player Anders Lindberg, the guitarist Sami Nerberg and the beater Benny Larsson, the group records several demonstrations until 1990 when one of them entitled " Kur-naked-Gi-A" draws the attention of the recording company Black Mark and allows him to obtain its first contract.
In 1991, it records its first album " Nothing Drank Death Remains" with the sound engineer of Bathory and starts to point out itself by the specialized press. It has however evil to dissociate remainder of the Swedish scene death-metal then in full explosion (Entombed, Grave, Dismember, Unleashed,…).
The second album " Unorthodox" left the following year proves much more convincing and largely exceeds the borders of the death-metal by integrating parts of acoustic guitar and many changes of rate/rhythm. The last title of the album " When All Is Said" flirte with the ballade and one can even intend daN Swanö to sing of a clear voice on " Enigma".
After the exit of this disc, daN Swanö decides to concentrate on its new activity of producer. He works then for various metal groups in his own studio, Unisound Studio, and starts to be made a reputation in the medium.
The third album " Spectral The Sorrows" leaves in 1993 and lorgne towards the progressive Rock. It resembles curiously the music played by Unicorn, the parallel project of daN. It proves extremely convincing musicalement and makes it possible the group not only to obtain the recognition with the international level, but also to be established as leader in his category.
On the mini-album " Until Eternity Ends" left into 1994 is a resumption of The Police, " Invisible Sun". The same year leaves the album " Purgatory Afterglow" , almost entirely written per daN Swanö and which is musicalement perfect balance between traditional death-metal and the experimental music. DaN, which is a hyperactive, written type-setter and leaves practically simultaneously an album its parallel project gothic-metal Nightingale. For the first time, tensions are felt between the members of the group.
In 1996 the very ambitious " leaves; Crimson" composed of only one and single 40 minute old piece, entirely written per daN Swanö and recorded in less than 12 midnight by musicians who will not have had their word to say to the artistic point of view, which will do nothing but worsen the tensions incipient between daN and the remainder from the group. Musicalement, the album is very inspired and succeeded. One finds there calm passages and passages violent one, clear vocal parts and others " grognées" , as of the tablecloths of keyboards which point out Marillion curiously. In spite of the anti-commercial format of the disc, " Crimson" is the best sale of the group to date. It will give place to a round through the Europe.
The album " Infernal" left in 1997 illustrates the tensions within the group which go until the nonsense. Whereas half of the pieces is entirely written and played per daN Swanö, other half is by the remainder of the group and daN does nothing but there sing.
In order to leave the dead end, daN Swanö proposes to continue the all alone group. The recording company accepts under the condition that the following album is recorded only by the remainder of the group. Thus always the same year the album " leaves; Cryptic" which daN does not take part. The disc, which is very directed towards the death-metal of the beginning, will receive a reception very mitigated on behalf of the fans.
After a European round and the exit of a compilation " Evolution" in 1999, Edge off Sanity stops any activity. DaN Swanö benefits from it to leave the album " Moontower" under its name and to give rise to the second album of Nightingale.
In spite of the strong pressure of the fans, daN refuses to start again Edge Sanity off. Until the day when an Israeli fan begs it to give a successor to " Crimson" until him to propose to support the expenses of recording of them.
The idea of a " Crimson II" fact its way and ends up leading in 2003. DaN starts by recording all alone at his place, then is made help by 2 guitarists, Mike Wead and Simon Johansson, and a singer for the clear parts Roger Johansson. The album is again composed of only one piece, but which is this time divided into several tracks. It will achieve the unanimity of the fans like press.
