Edge (tool)
The edge is a tool of the Mason stone. It is a kind of axe with direct percussion on the stone made up of two edges right and parallel with the handle. It is also called hammer cutting or thin layer. It is employed for the size of the tender and half-firm stones.
There exist edges tooled or with brettures, provided with teeth punts, or edge with barley grain provided with teeth in points called grains of barley. This last is used for the size of the stones hard, firm and half-closed.
In the same family of tool, there exists the hammer.
History
The edge was employed since the Middle Ages for the tender pierrre or semi farm. It was replaced at the 19th century by the railroad, which faster, allowed profits of profitability. Today, cutting it is not employed any more in the workshops of stone professional size, even if it always enters the apprentice training mason stone.
