The economy of the Cantal is mainly based on the Agriculture and the Tourisme.

Breeding

One practices there primarily the breeding of Bovin S (race Salers) (467 000 heads in 2000), sheep (56 200 heads in 2000) and porcine (53 700 heads in 2000).

The breeding is also used with the production as milk (3 623.000 liters in 2000) which is used partly in the manufacture of cheese such as the cantal, the Bleu of Auvergne (47 220 tons of Fromage in 2000), or the salers.

Cultures

The Cantal produces also cereals (67 740 tons in 2000)

Industry

Wood remains a richness of the area (oaks, coniferous tree). The forestry development, less prosperous than formerly, remains a component of the local economy. A very important factory of industrial joinery, installed in Ydes, employs several hundreds of people.
