The economy of conventions is, with the Théorie of the regulation, one of the two principal approaches hétérodoxes of the economy in France. It took its rise starting from the middle of the years 1980 around work of François Eymard-Duvernay, Olivier Favereau, André Orléan, Robert Salais and Laurent Thévenot.

More recent work, as those coordinated not Philippe Batifoulier within the framework of the work " Theory of Conventions" (Economica, 2001) or those carried out within the framework of the conference of Defense in 2003, indeed showed that this approach is distinguished from the other approaches which, in economy, uses the concept of convention in what it is a interpretative approach of conventions.

Its program consists of a resumption of the radical project of John Maynard Keynes which aims at drawing all the conclusions for the economic analysis from a taking into realistic account of the Incertitude, during assumption of limited Rationalité. In the forefront of these consequences the need for an endogenous treatment of the methods of management of this uncertainty appears, that is to say presumedly shared practical representations (of what conventions consist). These representations return to waitings which the agents as for the course of their coordinations form, that is to say with the idea that they are made operation of the groups in which they act.

In the furrow of Albert O. Hirschman, the economy of conventions develops a multi-field approach of these representations attentive with their normative dimension (they thus maintains a close dialog with the Sociologie). This one contains an intrinsic dynamics under the terms of the plurality of the designs of conceived well by the agents, and of the critical and justifications to which they give place.

This plurality of the designs of the good, most legitimate and justifiable (studied by Luc Boltanski and Laurent Thévenot), prepared with the greatest pooling with most local and less transposable is during theory of the plural identity which, on the basis of the membership perceived by the individuals with collectives of varied sizes, exploits the idea of méta- Préférence, relativizes the dichotomy fine means/at the base of the Théorie of the rational choice and opens on a variety of forms of engagement in the action.

The principal empirical analyzes of this approach relate to the diversity of the forms of organization of the companies.

The economy of conventions also develops a theory of the Institutions.
