Ecitoninae

The majority of the Fourmis legionaries of America belong to the Sous-famille of the Ecitoniae . This subfamily is divided into two groups, the Tribu of the Cheliomyrmecini and that of the Ecitonini. The first contains only the kind Cheliomyrmex, and the Ecitonini tribe contains four kinds, Neivamyrmex , Nomamyrmex , Labidus , and Eciton , the kind whose the name rises from the subfamily (Brady, 2003, Tree off Life). The kind Neivamyrmex is largest of all the kinds of ants legionaries, and contains some 120 Espèces, all with the the United States. The prevalent species of Eciton is Eciton burchellii , whose common noun is Fourmi legionary and who is regarded as a species prototype.
