Echéry

Echéry (or Echérich, Eckerick, Echérick)

Noble family which settled in Small Rombach with Sainte Cross-with-Mines. It made build at the 13th century on an abrupt rock a strong castle which dominates the hamlet of Small Rombach. Often indicated under the patronym of Waffler, this noble family appears in 1232. In 1284, the possession of this Château gave place to a conflict during which the knight Jean d' Echéry was killed by his own cousins. In reprisal, the castle was besieged and taken by Walther von Hohenstein to avenge its family which maintained excellent relations with him. The castle was restored later with the cousins of the family of Echéry which had goods also with Sélestat where one of the members exerted the functions of Schultheiss. At the end of the 14th century, a branch of the Zorn, a branch of the family of Masevaux and the Munzmeister of Brisach take the nickname of Echéry, resulting from the three girls of Jean d' Echéry.
