These last years, Eccles saw decreasing its population in particular in the zones of Brookhouse Estate in Peel Green, Westwood Park in Winton, and Patricroft. History
6th century - the name of “Eccles” derives from Latin ecclesia : church. This Latin word had been adopted by the Celtic tribes which occupied Roman Brittany and corresponds to the word “ eglwys ” in Welsh modern. The fact that “Eccles” became the name of the place suggests that the Anglo-Saxon colonists who settled there towards 600 found there a church of which they had intended to pronounce the Celtic name. 1796 - a pastrycook of Eccles, William Birch, invents the cakes with the grapes which will make the celebrity of the city and will be exported in the whole world.1817 - Appearance of the Eccles Wakes , an annual festival in particular comprising a contest of women unijambists and eaters of slippers to apples. It was abolished in 1877.
