Ecchi

Ecchi (in Japanese エッチ etchi or H , to pronounce etchi ) is a meaning Japanese Mot “indecent” or “lustful”. It can be used as qualifier for all that is erotic or pornographic (Film S, video games, Anime ,…), although nowadays with the Japan, one prefers the adjective ero to him ( ero-manga , ero-range ,…). The word ecchi arrived to France with the Manga S and the Japanese cartoons.

Origin of the word

A widespread theory wants that it is the first letter of the word Hentai (変態 【へんたい】) written in Rōmaji which, with the Japanese pronunciation, ended up giving ecchi (in English, H decides //). However, the two words do not have any more common significance. Indeed, even if ecchi goes from the light erotism to the sex act in itself ( ecchi suru : to make love), there are no concept of perversity or anormality, contrary to Hentai .

It should be noted that the most widespread orthography in Occident of this word does not respect the Méthode Hepburn, according to which it would be necessary to write etchi .

Use

The ecchi is used in many mangas and animate, in particular those aiming at a male public. It is one of the most current forms of the Fan service.

In the kind Shōnen, the ecchi is often presented in a light and comic or suggested way. It is a component essence of the sub-genus Harem ( Love Hina , Negima , Ichigo 100% ) but is also frequently used in others shōnen, with more or less high amount, as in Air GEAR or May Hime .

In the Seinen, the ecchi can be more thorough and cover a sexual aspect as in Step up coils story and Ebichu .

The main features of the ecchi in the mangas are:

  • the absence of naked total, except notable for Ebichu
  • In some seinen like Elfen Lied , the centres are sometimes visible but never the genitals
  • Souvent only the sexual parts and the centres are hidden
  • Parfois only the back is naked in particular when that the character leaves the bath or when which it is in his bed, the front masked by a cloth
  • the vision, more or less accidental, underclothing generally white and sometimes stylized judged reasons Kawaii like strawberries ( Ichigo 100% ) or hearts
  • clothes torn at the time of a combat (Katana, Kunaï, magic,…)
