Ebles Ier de Roucy

Ebles Ier , died in 1033, was count de Roucy of 1000 with 1033 and archbishop of Rheims of 1021 with 1033.

Family origin

The only certainty concerning its family is a document which says it brother of:
  • Eudes (Odo) of Roucy, known as the Fort († August 27th, after 1021), lord of Rumigny.
  • Liétaud de Marle, or Létard, Létald.
  • Judith which married Manassès II of Rethel, count de Rethel

He is traditionally regarded as wire of the count Gislebert de Roucy, his predecessor, and of the girl of a duke of Aquitaine. However no contemporary document mentions a wife or children for Gislebert and in addition this bond does not explain all:

  • the first name of Lietaud returns to the counts de Mâcon,
  • that of Eudes returns to the Robertiens, with the Herbertiens where with the house of Blois.
  • the grounds of Rumigny and Coucy belonged before to the house of Blois.

These are the various points which encouraged Jean-Christmas Mathieu to propose a new genealogical construction for the ascent of Eble de Roucy:

Biography

As one saw, it had a solid network of alliance with its advent, network which it supplemented by marrying Béatrice de Hainaut, girl of Regnier IV, count de Hainaut and of Hedwige, girl of Hugues Capet. Of this marriage it had:
  • Alix, which succeeded to him and which married Hildouin IV of Montdidier, count de Ramerupt and of Roucy († 1063)
  • Hedwige, which inherited the ground of Rumigny with died of his/her uncle Eudes and who was married in Geoffroy IV, lord of Flouriennes.

About 1020, the two husbands separated. Ebles entered the orders and was elected archbishop of Rheims, while Béatrice married Manassès de Ramerupt.
