Eastern Slavonia

The Eastern Slavonia or Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Syrmie Western or Serb autonomous Oblast of Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Syrmie Western (in Serb: Istočna Slavonija, Baranja I Zapadni Srem / ИсточнаСлавонија, БарањаиЗападниСрем ) was a Serb autonomous region of the East of the Croatia. It was integrated into the Serb République of Krajina between 1991 and 1995 then remained under control of ATNUSO (English UNTAES) until in 1998, date on which it was reinstated peacefully in Croatia.

It included/understood the areas of Syrmie Western (area of Vukovar), of Croatian Baranja (area of Beli Manastir) and an any small portion of the geographical area of Eastern Slavonie.

History

Just as the Serb Republic of Krajina, the Eastern Slavonia was created by the Serbes in answer to the declaration of independence of the Slovenia and the Croatia on June 25th, 1991. The 26, its first president, Goran Hadžić, is named. Very quickly, the area integrates the Serb Republic of Krajina until 1995.

To semi-1995, the Croatian army launches the Opération Storm the purpose of which is to restore the control of the Croatian territory. This operation is a success because it allows the disappearance of the Serb Republic of Krajina, except for the Eastern Slavonia. The Accords of Dayton envisage whereas the rehabilitation of this territory will be done under the Croatian jurisdiction. The agreement of Erdut is then signed between Croatia and the representatives of the Eastern Slavonia. This agreement, beginning on January 15th, 1996 and designed to last one year, organizes the demilitarization of the area and its peaceful rehabilitation in Croatia under the observation of a force of protection of the the United Nations, the ATNUSO, composed of 4  800 soldiers, 400 police officers and 99 observers. Finally, the agreement is prolonged one year under the control of 180 civilians of the United Nations.

The area was sometimes called Podunavska Krajina by the Serb ones and Croatian Podunavlje by the Croats. Between 1995 and 1997, it bore the name of Srem-Baranja Oblast (Oblast de Syrmie and Baranja).

Geography

The Eastern Slavonia was located in Central Europe, in the north of the Balkans, in the south of the Plaine of Pannonia. It had borders with the Yugoslavia in the east, the Croatia in the south and the west and the Hungary in north. The the Danube constituted its border with Yugoslavia.

The territory was formed by part of the Plaine of Pannonia made up of fertile agricultural land.

Population

Before the war of independence of Croatia, the population was made up of 90,454 Croats (47%), 61,492 Serb (32%) and 40,217 of other ethnos groups (21%).

The main cities were Vukovar and Beli Manastir.

The territory was cut out in five municipalities: Beli Manastir (Baranja), Dalj, Tenja (Eastern Slavonia), Vukovar and Mirkovci (in Syrmie Western).
