The Eastern Malaysia includes/understands the States of Sabah and Sarawak located on the island of Borneo, separated from the Western Malaysia by the southernmost China Sea.

This part of the country is developed than the peninsular part, but it has many natural resources (gas, oil).

History

Sabah and Sarawak were managed independently of the Fédération of Malaysia under the name of British Colonie of north of Borneo. They do not rejoinrent the Federation of Malaysia in 1957. However they decided to be linked with the Federation in 1963.

As federated States, Sabah and Sarawak preserved a level of autonomy higher than that of the States of the Malayan Péninsule. The control of immigration is independent and even the Malaysian ones living in the other States must be subjected to special procedures.

Labuan

The island of Labuan had started from Sabah until in 1984, when it became “federal territory”, managed by the federal government, with an aim of transforming it into a financial center offshore oil rig with distinct customs and tax system.
