Eastern Caprivi

The Eastern Caprivi , then Lozi starting from 1976, was a autonomous Bantoustan located in the area of Caprivi in Namibia between 1976 and 1989. It gathered African of the Ethnie Lozi.

History

The Bantustan of Caprivi Oriental is created in March 1972 according to the Commission Report Odendaal of 1964.

In March 1976, autonomy is granted to the Bantustan which is famous Lozi on April 1st 1976.

Of July 1st 1984 with the reincorporation of Lozi in the new Namibian area of Caprivi, the Bantustan will be managed by the government of Namibia.

During the Years 1980, as a basis Lozi been used of fold of the movement armed Angolan UNITA and was the theater many incursions of SWAPO folded up in Angola.

Geography

Caprivi Oriental was located at the North-eastern extrème Namibia, at the end of the Bande of Caprivi which connects it to the remainder country. It was surrounded by the Angola, the Zambia, the Zimbabwe and the Botswana and was bordered by the Zambezi in North, the Cuando in the East and the Chobe in the South.

Caprivi Oriental is one of the most populated greenest areas and of Namibia.

The tropical climate and the rain season extending from December to March maintain many marshes, the easily flooded plains, the forests which attract a varied and many fauna (approximately 450 animal species).

Policy

The democratic Alliance of Turnhalle (Democratic Turnhalle Alliance or DTA in English) was with the capacity of Lozi of 1976 with 1981.

Population

Caprivi Oriental had been created to accommodate the Lozis. The capital and the most populated city were Katima Mulilo (today chief town of the area Caprivi). The other cities are Choi, Chinchimane, Bukalo, Sibinda and Impaliola.

The official language was the Lozi.

Flag

Before 1977, a first Drapeau was in force in Caprivi Oriental. It was replaced by another defined in the section two of Caprivi Flag Act.

Blue refers to the faith, fidelity and the devotion like with the lakes, rivers and with the sky. The white represents the unit, peace and the efforts towards the virtue. The green refers to agriculture and the natural resources. The red represents the fight for freedom. The elephants symbolize the national unit.

The flag was abandoned in May 1989 with the reincorporation of the Bantustan in Namibia.
