East village

East Village is a district of the island of Manhattan to New York. It is roughly delimited by the 14 {{E}} street in north, by the East River with the east, Houston Street in the south and the 3 {{E}} Avenue in the west. It is located at the east of Greenwich Village, from where its name.

This cutting is dubious, certain consider that it is only about part of the Lower East Side (the south-eastern part of Manhattan), which is in agreement with the presence of the Avenue C so called Avenue Loisaida, that is to say a version hispanisante and phonetics of " Lower East Side ". In fact, this denomination comes primarily from a communication campaign carried out by property developers in the Années 1980, anxious to develop this zone. Lower East Side had indeed the reputation to be a poor and badly famed district. In addition, the name of East Village agreeably pointed out that of its neighbor, Greenwich Village, whose attractivity was not any more to show.

Part of the district was called formerly Alphabet City (the alphabet city), because of the four avenues has, B, C, D which furrow it. It is in fact the only avenues of Manhattan to carry this type of name made of only one letter. It was formerly a cut-throat, before becoming a district Bohemia, rather occupied by students, artists… Since the end of the Years 1990, the population again changed style, smarter and with more of financial means. Saying of East Village (which today does not take place any more to be):

  • Avenue has, you' Re Alright . (all is well)

  • Avenue B, you' Re Faces . (you are courageous)
  • Avenue C, you' Re Crazy . (you are insane)
  • Avenue D, you' Re Dead . (you died)
