the earthquake of Kōbe () touched the Japan.
The January 17th 1995, with 5:46 local time, started in the town of Kōbe a violent one seism. The Earthquake of magnitude 6,9 was followed of sixteen counterparts of less intensity. The Hypocentre was under the port of Kōbe.
The earthquake occurred along a north-eastern/south-western fault which crosses the small strait between the Awaji island and the town of Kōbe.
The principal characteristic of this seism was the vertical extent of the jolts: whereas horizontal displacements were limited to about fifteen centimetres, the vertical variations reached from 50 to 80 cm even 100 cm in the part is city.
Two facts explain the violence of the seism of Kōbe: low depth of its hypocentre and the young age of the faults. These faults not having practically never played before, the stored energy was very important.
