Earthquake of July 2006 in Java
The July 17th 2006, a Séisme of Subduction of magnitude 7,7 causes a Tsunami concerning the island of Java, with 08:19 UTC (15h19, local time).
The Earthquake generated a three height meters wave which destroyed houses of the southern part of the island, carrying with the passage the life of 341 people. The U.S. Geological Survey defines the epicentre of the seism in the coordinates 9.22°S 107.32°E, its depth being estimated at 34 km of the surface of the ocean There would be also many damage on the west coast, on the hotel sites of Pangandaran.
After the seism, the Weather Agency of Indonesia specifies that “a tsunami localized could affect the dimensions located at less than 100 kilometers of the epicentre of the seism”, denying however the possibility of seeing emerging a tsunami to large scales, as that which struck the area the December 26th, 2004. In spite of that, the India always publishes a warning for the Archipel of the islands of Andaman, which is located in the Bay of Bengal and which suffered from the tsunami of the December 26th 2004. A warning was also published for the Christmas island (Australia). However, the police reports of the island indicate that no damage was caused. Only one tsunami of 60 centimetres was recorded at the Office of the Meteorology of the island. A warning was also published for the area of Kimberley in Australia.
An inhabitant of Pangalengan affirmed that the wave had arrived at a speed of 40 km/h. According to him, the wave would have made " at least 5 meters of haut".
According to the spokesperson of the Ministry for Health indonésien, nearly 450 people would have been wounded and 52.700 inhabitants would have lost their hearth. 140 people are reported missing.
