EarthBound

History

The August 27th 1994, Mother 2 leaves to the Japan. It is more than one remake that of a continuation about the preceding episode, Mother , left on BORN. Many derivative products (toys, books) are developed and know a great passion.

Encouraged by the success of the series, Nintendo leaves Mother 2 in North America under the name of EarthBound , on June 1st 1995. Hoping to make a Blockbuster of it, Nintendo multiplies publicities. The play itself, in a large coloured box, is accompanied by a guide of play mixing solution, false newspapers, false publicity and images of all the characters of the play in Modeling clay and the odorous charts. Despite everything, undoubtedly due to the fact of its very simple graphic style (in comparison with Final Fantasy VI for example), the play is only one very modest success.

The June 20th 2003, Mother (EarthBound 0) and Mother 2 (EarthBound) are republished on Game Boy Advance under the name of Mother 1+2 . After fallen through EarthBound 64, Mother 3 finally left to Japan in 2006 on Game Boy Advance. No American or European exit is planned for the moment.

History

Contrary to the majority of the roleplays, EarthBound is located in one contemporary time. The play parodies the Occidental culture (Ku Klux Klan with the Blues Brothers while passing by Nessie) and is with many recoveries surrealist Absurde or .

Earthbound starts when a meteor falls close to Onett, a peaceful small town, in middle of the night. Born share to see of what it acts and discovers a mechanical species of bee, Buzz Buzz, which teaches him that it comes ten years in the future, where the world was destroyed by terrible Giygas, so known under the name of the Universal Destructor, and speaks to him about a legend where three boys and a girl will overcome it thanks to wisdom, with courage, and the friendship.

Characters

Hero

(the names given are those defined by defect, but it is possible to re-elect the characters)

Ness, the hero of the play, is a thirteen year old boy who is discovered capacities PSI. It fights using a beater of Baseball. Its name is regarded as the anagram of SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System).
Paula is an young girl of Twoson, famous for its capacities PSI. Removed by the sect of Happy Happyiest, she will ask of the assistance to Ness by Télépathie. She generally fights with a stove.
Jeff is a young boy in boarding school with Winters. He is the son of famous Dr. Andonuts from where he holds his intelligence. Paula will contact it by Télépathie to ask him of the assistance at the time when Ness and this one will be found trapped by zombis in the town of Threed. Jeff is the only child of the band not to have capacities PSI… It compensates for this handicap by its IQ enabling him to use the firearms and to locate any object broken while transforming them into useful weapons for the engagements.
Poo is a mysterious prince coming from Dalaam, a remote region. It underwent a long drive accompanied by a special diet, with the result that it cannot eat same the products (Pizza, Hamburger) that his/her companions. If it fights only with its fists, it is able to copy the capacities of its adversaries.

Other characters

Pokey : The neighbor of Born who will be combined with Giygas in search of being able. It will appear several times and will always end up fleeing.
Giygas: The destructor of universe, absolute evil.
Starmen: Servants of Giygas, they exist in several different forms: Junior, Deluxe, Ghost…
Runaway Five: Group music pointing out the Brothers Blues which was involved in debt near the manager of a club and which will need the assistance for Born. They regularly thereafter will be met.
Mr. Saturn: Small round small beasts with a large nose and a node on the head alive in the Saturn valley. They are expressed in a police force different from that of the other characters, sometimes not easily readable.
Apple Kid: A young scientist who will help Ness with inventions mild nutters (the supprimor of pencil, paper catches-zombie).

Gameplay

Engagements

The enemies are visible on the chart and the engagements engage with their contact. If enemy is surprised by behind, that will offer to Born and its team turn in advance, if it is the enemy who surprises the player, he has a turn in advance. If the adversary is clearly weaker than the player, the combat finishes automatically and the points of experiments are directly distributed.

Earthbound takes again the traditional principles of the roleplays: it is possible to attack, use capacities Psychique S (alias capacities PSI) of various natures (of attacks, defenses, care) costing psychic points, to use objects and to flee. The player can also let the computer manage the combat in his place.

The points of life are placed in a meter. After an attack, the meter decreases gradually; thus, if a character receives many damage, it can still have time to carry out an action and thus to avoid dying.

At the end of the combat, points of experiment are distributed. The money is not recovered directly, it is transferred automatically in its account, counts to which Ness can have access by using counters ATM disseminated in the play.

Others

The support on the key has calls the menu. Several options are available, the majority are traditional roleplay (Objects, Equipement, Statut, Pouvoir PSI), but two approach more of the play adventure: “To speak with” ( Talk to ) and “To examine” ( Check ) which makes it possible to act on the environment.

One can transport only one limited number of objects: 10 per character. It is however possible in storing ad infinitum near the sister of Born.

The Téléphone occupies a big role in the play. It makes it possible to call the father of Born, which makes it possible to safeguard and recover the money of the engagements and to call the sister of Born so that she stores and delivers her objects through the company Escargo Express. It is also necessary to call his mother regularly so that Ness does not become nostalgic.

The money of Born can be in two places: in safety on its account or him. To manage the money of the account, it is necessary to find machines ATM (for Automatic Teller Machine : automatic teller machine).

Capacities PSI have various levels, defined by Greek letters (α, β, Ω inter alia). The name of the most powerful attack of Born is the name which one gave to our " thing favorite" at the beginning of the play ( Rockin by defect). A capacity PSI allows téléporter, but it requires a rather vast space.

To note

HALL Laboratory having contributed to EarthBound , Ness appears in Super Bros Smash. and Ness, Mr. Saturn, Onett and Fourside in Super Bros Smash. Fray , plays of the same company. On the other hand, nothing enables us to affirm that Ness will be present in the third opus of the series Super Bros Smash. Brawl (Lucas, protagonist of Mother 3 , nevertheless was announced for Brawl ).
EarthBound makes with many recoveries reference to the Beatles, and due: Shigesato Itoi, the originator of the play, affirmed to be about it fan and Ape quoted John Lennon like source of inspiraton for the musics of the play.
the funds of the engagements are in fact of the mathematical graphs which use dynamic variables.
At the time of the passage in American version, several passages were modified. Any mention with a preceding play ( Mother ) disappeared, but also certain mentions with plays Nintendo or terms not being regarded as acceptable for youth (any reference to alcohol was thus replaced by references to the coffee, for example).
