Earl Warren

Legal career

Earl Warren is born with Los Angeles, and passes its childhood to Bakersfield, to California. He studies with Berkeley where he chooses the right. After its studies, he works during five years for law firms of the area of San Francisco, then as from 1920 for the county of San Francisco.

In 1925, it is named prosecutor ( District Attorney ) of the county of Alameda, to finish the mandate of the occupant of this elective, outgoing station. It is then elected there for three four years consecutive mandates. Warren shows a severe prosecutor. Although it has the reputation to take freedoms with the procedure, none the judgments which it obtains are cancelled in call.

Become a figure known in California, there is named with the council of the regents ( Board off Regents , the organization directing) of the the University of California ( University off California indicates the whole of the public universities of the State of California) while remaining prosecutor.

In 1939 he becomes public prosecutor of the State of California. He is elected governor of California in 1942 under the colors of the Republican party.

Governor of California

In 1946, as the law of California authorizes it then, it is presented at the same time to the primary educations of the democratic party and the Republican party and gains both. It thus gains the election without opposition. He is still re-elected in 1950, this time under the only republican colors.

Its passage to the report heading is sullied by its support for the federal policy with distance and internment with American with origin Japanese women during the Second world war. But it carries out especially the infrastructures which will allow twenty years of fast development of California, until the mediums of the Années 1960. In particular, it develops the University of California considerably, with its president Clark Kerr, to make of it the network of public universities which provided a cheap formation and of great quality with two generations of Californian.

In 1948, it fails like candidate the vice-presidency of the United States the sides of Thomas Dewey. The election is gained of accuracy by the outgoing president, the democrat Harry Truman.

At the Supreme court

It is in 1953 that it is named at the Supreme court by the president Eisenhower, to replace Fred Vinson, deceased. With the head of the court, it shows much more progressist that awaited. Exerting a real influence on his colleagues, he manages to obtain long series of judgments delivered unanimously of which most famous are Brown v. Board off Education, a few months hardly after his arrival at the Court, which declares the racial segregation in the unconstitutional public schools, and in 1966 Miranda v. Arizona, on the rights of the stopped person, which is inter alia at the origin of the text read by the police force with the stopped people, popularized by the cinema (you have the right to keep silence, etc).

He withdraws Court in 1969 at sixty eighteen years. The president Nixon names Warren Burger to succeed to him, and the court takes in the following years a more preserving orientation, without the principal decisions of the Warren period not being called into question.

After the assassination of the president Kennedy in 1963, it is him which had chaired the federal board of inquiry (the Commission Warren) which concludes that Lee Harvey Oswald is the gunner and that it acted only.

Warren died in Washington.
