ESP (Vehicle)

ESP for Electronic Stability Program (also called ESC for Electronic Stability Control ) is equipment of active Sécurité intended to improve control of trajectory of a vehicle Automobile.

German automobile equipment Bosch was the first to develop the system ESP (in German Elektronisches Stabilitätsprogramm (ESP®) ) which was used initially by Mercedes-Benz and BMW in 1995 before spreading on other marks and going down on other ranges. Since the first version of 1995, ESP evolved/moved much. It is today a program which works in collaboration with various electronic management systems (antipatinage: ASR , ABS , EDC…).

The name of ESP is especially taken again by the German and French manufacturers. Other marks name it differently (see below). The Société of the engineers of the car recommends the use of initials ESC.

Principle of operation

ESP makes it possible to correct the trajectory while acting on the system of old Frein. Its operation is simple; the vehicle at the time of a Virage taken at too high speed can lose adherence:
  • Is to understeer: the nose gear slips and the car goes straight instead of following the curve.
  • Is to oversteer: the rear wheel-axle unit takes down and if the trajectory is not restored the car leaves in slew-round.
These phenomena are detected by Capteur S disseminated on the level of the travelling trains and direction. These small calculators check (25 times a second) and analyze if the real trajectory followed by the vehicle is well that desired by the driver. Thus if an abnormal situation occurs, the trajectory can be corrected by a braking targeted on the adequate wheel.
