EP-Tang

Together episcopal of Beijing imperial (end XIXe century), the EP-Tang is located inside the enclosure of the palate of the emperor. Rebuilt in 1887 pennies the supervision of Monseigneur Favier, apostolic vicar, it replaces old episcopal buildings. In 1900, it was the place of violent one engagements at the time of the Révolte of the Boxers.

The EP-Tang east girds of a surrounding wall 1360 meters length which separates it from joint lanes and houses (in the south) as well as IEN-Tsé-Tang, then of an imperial ground in north. On a place, following the Avenue of the EP-Tang and the Street of the Palate, a " Grand' porte" , or main door, opens on two large courses. Inside the enclosure, the cathedral of Saint-Saver followed by four large courses dominates. Between these last, the dwellings of the bishop and the missionaries are built. The unit includes/understands also one gets, a pharmacy, a museum, a large library, a Chinese library, a refectory, a room of recreation… Above the bedside of the cathedral, are the workshops, the printing works and the house from abroad. One also finds at the EP-Tang large and a small seminar as well as stores.

More in north, the IEN-Tsé-Tang, or Alms house, held by the Sisters of Vincent Saint of Paul, is separated from the EP-Tang by a lane which will be walled at the time of the Revolt of the Boxers (1900). This unit, in addition to a vault, includes/understands a dispensary, an orphanage, a catechumenate and schools of girls. Still further in the North-East, Cha-La-Eul, at ten minutes out of the walls, includes/understands a residence of missionaries with church and catechumenate, a Marist establishment with orphanage of boys and one of the establishments of the Sisters of Charity (orphanages, dispensary,…).
