Biography

Great personality of the black novel, one owes him of many titles with success, several times adapted to the cinema in a notable way.

Curiously, this large Master of the black novel enters in literature with a novel of science fiction Find The Feathered Serpent (1952). Its notoriety will continue however with the appearance on stage of the inspectors of the 87th District to which it will devote an about sixty novels: COP To hasten ( Brush , 1956), The Mugger ( the Bell ringer , 1956), The Pusher ( Fourgue , 1956) poses the first steps of its so particular work which will be able to evolve/move with the passing of years. In this universe eminently machist putting in scene at the sides of Steve Carella, the inspectors Meyer Meyer, Kling, Hawes, Brown and Willis under the lenient and understanding cane of lieutenant Byrnes, the women will penetrate little by little until becoming characters impossible to circumvent (Eileen Burke, Annie Rawles, Sharyn Cooke), ED McBain always endeavouring to stick to contemporary social reality and the evolution of manners. In addition to their innovative qualities: recourse to the scientific police and legal medicine, the novels of McBain are characterized by the concision of the style, a remarkable work over romantic time curling the perfection in Money Money Money ( Cash Cash , 2001), the approach of the police officers in their globality (McBain is one of the first if not the first to make them evolve/move in their family circle) and the overlap of the intrigues ( Lightning , 1985).

The last and Romance fifty-seventh that ED McBain will devote to the 87ème district are Fiddlers! ( Play Violins , 2005). Another recurring, prone character of 13 novels, is the lawyer Matthew Hope, resident of Calusa (Florida) which will cross for the first time Steve Carella in The Last Best Hope ( the Paradise of the Failures , 2000). He was also a noticed scenario writer, in particular that of the Oiseaux of Alfred Hitchcock, and took part in the writing of several series TV ( the iron Man , Columbo )

He wrote under many pseudonyms, like ED McBain, Richard Marsten, Hunt Collins, Curt Canon and Ezra Hannon…
