EDTA

The EDTA is the initials of the ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid . The chemical formula of this aminopolycarboxylic Acide is C₁₀H₁₆N₂O₈ of molar mass 292,24264 g mol^-1.

This tétra-acid is a agent chelating (or complexant) powerful and forms complexes very stable Métal lic, which makes a Poison of it. In the complexes, l'EDTA is related to the metal cations in the form of one of its combined bases.

Applications

It is likely to be used in many applications, for example in the Industrie of the Papier, the Photographie or industries of the Hygiène and the Aliment surface (Antioxydant E385). Because of its Toxicity, the concentration is obviously adapted with use. L'EDTA is used to treat Eau X (for example in the Lessive S), to avoid precipitations (scaling).

In Chemistry, l'EDTA is used or to proportion by complexation the metal Ion S in solution (TH).

In Biochemistry, l'EDTA is used as inhibiter of the metal-worker-enzymes. Its use is very frequent in the purification of the nucleic acids (DNA, ARN and Protéine S). In sequestering in particular the ions Magnésium Mg²⁺, it blocks the activity of many Nucléase S which are dependant on this ion. The EDTA is also an inhibiter of the métalloprotéases to Zinc and limit thus the Hydrolyze of proteins in the cellular extracts .

In biological Genius, l'EDTA is used in routine to stop the activity of Polymérase S, the chelation of the Calcium ions modifying the conformation of the enzymes.

In medicine, l'EDTA, by forming ferric chelates (Iron (III)), allows to fight against the tissue iron overloads (hypersidéroses). L'EDTA is also used in the intoxications by heavy metals. It is also used as conservative in the eye lotions, in conjunction with other conservatives such as the thiomersal or chloride benzalkonium. The EDTA is also used as anticoagulant.

In Agronomy, l'EDTA is a Chélateur able to make return certain nutritive elements in the plant. An addition d'EDTA in a ground makes it possible to fight against the Carence S in Oligo-élément S.

In the field of the Agroalimentary and Cosmetic , l'EDTA is used like stabilizer of the product.
