Eärendil
Eärendil (in Quenya “which likes the sea”), named by his/her mother Ardamírë “jewel of the world”, is a character of the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, which particularly appears in Silmarillion .
Wire of Tuor and Idril, it was born with Gondolin. He escaped the bag from the city and was taken along in Arvernien. There, it became acquainted with the prince elf Círdan, who builds for him a ship, called Vingilot. He married Elwing, girl of Dior, of which he had the twins Elrond and Elros.
When the wire of Fëanor devastated Arvenien, Ulmo, the god of the seas, transformed Elwing into bird. In this form, it joined Eärendil at sea and its Silmaril gave to him, that Lúthien and Beren had torn off with Morgoth. With it, it set sail until in Aman. There, Eärendil pled in favor of the people of Ground of the Medium near the Valar, required of them to help them against the Enemy. First mortal to have pressed the Immortal Grounds, it was not authorized to return on the grounds of Mortals. It was sent to traverse the sky in its ship Vingilot, with Silmaril on the face. Manwë also granted to him to be able to choose between the race of the Men and that of the Elves. This possibility of choice extended to its descent. Eärendil went down again once again on ground to fight at the time of the Guerre of the Great Anger, during which it overcame Ancalagon, largest of the winged dragon S, and to guide Edain towards Númenor.
Its star was to be a sign of hope for oppressed. It is that which the Elves prefer, and its light conceals a great capacity. Thus, Galadriel, in the Lord of the Rings , gives to the Hobbit Frodon a bottle containing the light of Eärendil. The star corresponds to Venus.
The name of Eärendil was also given, at the Third Age, the fifth king of Gondor.
