Dynasty amorienne

The dynasty of Amoriens reign on Constantinople and the Byzantine Empire from 820 to 867. It is founded by Michel Amorien , thus named because he was originating in Amorium, in Phrygie and which becomes basileus of Byzance under the name of Michel II the Stammerer .

The reign of the amoriens is characterized by the fight of the images: after the restoration of the iconoclasme, by Leon V the Armenian and continued by Michel II and his son Theophilus, it sees the re-establishment of the worship of the images by the Empress Théodora, widow of Theophilus and regent under the reign of his son Michel III.

The dynasty amorienne will be completed in a bloody way, with the assassination of Michel III by his chamberlain Basile the Macedonian, proclaimed Co-emperor and successor of Michel

By the marriage of Michel II Amorien with Euphrosyne, girl of Constantin VI and Marie d' Arménie, the dynasty amorienne is looked like the indirect continuation of the dynasty isaurienne; for this reason, it is sometimes called " dynasty isaurienne-amorienne " or " second dynasty isaurienne ".

The dynasty amorienne is represented by:

  • Michel II the Stammerer (820-829)

  • Theophilus (829-842)
  • Théodora (842-856)
  • Michel III the Drunkard (842-867)
