Dylan Dog

Dylan Dog is a Italian character of Cartoons born. It is a private detective ex- Policier and a ex- Alcoolique which makes now Enquête S into cases which touch the Surnaturel and the Horreur.

Birth of the character

Dylan Dog is born in 1986, in October: its " père" is brilliant the Tiziano Sclavi. It is about the first series horror published by the publisher of Fumetti (Italian cartoons) Sergio Bonelli Editore; the success obtained by this character was amazing, as well on the level of criticism as to that of the public, until arriving at a million copies sold per month. Each month, a new job number is published thus that two different republications, without counting annual special issues or the aperiodic ones. Certain job numbers were translated into French, without however meeting a success comparable with that which was obtained in Italy. In this at the end of January 2007, number 245 of the adventure of Dylan Dog is on sale in Italy.

Which is this?

Dylan refers of the English actor Rupert Everett. It is a ex-police officer and an ex-alcoholic who decided to work all alone to inquire into the cases which pass very close to the supernatural one and the horror. To engage it is enough to go to London, with number 7 of Craven Road and to pay him 100 pounds sterling per day, excluded expenses (on this subject, Dylan, which however fights the horrors of this world and besides has a considerable capitalist side: in the first episodes, its tariff was of 50 books per day.). During its adventures, bloody but so poetic and melancholic persons, Dylan fought vampires, wolves-garous and phantoms without forgetting monsters much more dangerous and unfair: domestic violences, racism, indifference, the thirst for being able, the trouble. Some of its adventures marked in an indelible way the memory of the readers and were considered among the best stories as cartoons who were never written in Italy. Ah, if you are a poor young girl without protection, take guard with the large blue eyes and the dark charm of Dylan: it is an irresistible lady-killer who, each month, fact of the new conquests… In addition to the women, of which some marked it with life, Dylan has some obsessions reccurantes since now almost 250 episodes: he listens to heavy metal, adores films of horror and the pizza pies (without meat because he is vegetarian). At the vestimentary level, it is sometimes suspected never of changing. Indeed, it is always vêtu, winter like summer, of a red shirt, a black jacket, of the Jean blue and a maroon pair of clarks. Actually, it has an almost inexhaustible reserve of identical clothing all, even if him deplores sometimes that its preferred shirt wears a hole or a task of blood… Other practices: to build the small-scale model of a galleon, always the same one, that it has not managed to finish for 20 years. As soon as it touches with the goal, it always occurs something which destroys its work and obliges it with all to start again. This galleon has a close link with the mysterious one passed from Dylan, and one understands with the court of unquestionable episode that its life will end when it assembles all the small pieces of wood. Dylan also plays (but very badly) of the Clarinette. Always the same piece: the sonata of the trilles of the devil of Giuseppe Tartini. It drives a white convertible registered DYD 666 to which it is very attached. Still a characteristic: Dylan has a " fifth direction and demi" who the tarabusque one when the paranormal Miss with the real life.

To note that Rupert Everett and Tiziano Sclavi worked together in 1994 (left 1995 to France) on the film Dellamorte Dellamore inspired by a news of this last and where the atmosphere of film and the character of Francesco Dellamorte are not without pointing out the adventures of Dylan Dog.

Which is his/her friends?

Its assistant with to do everything is a strange type with the features of Groucho Marx, which opens the door with the customers and submerges them of jokes, jokes and jokes. Extremely talkative, Groucho ensures each month the readers a good amount of humor and it is an irreplaceable ally of Dylan, although this last regularly threatens to lay off it when its stupid jokes exasperate it. However, it is hard to imagine how Dylan pourait to do without him. Indeed, Groucho is an unconditional moral support especially when Dylan Dog has the heart broken by a woman (what arrives almost at each new episode), it is also him which prepares the for the customers of the detective, and who launches his revolver in the critical situations to him. There is also the Bloch inspector of Scotland Yard, a ex-superior of Dylan, always with two fingers of the retirement; Bloch is very attached to Dylan and, very often, it helped it in its mishaps (for example, to leave the prison). Regularly, Dylan requires information of him on the businesses in progress at Scotland Yard. The answer of Bloch is invariably " not!!! " , under pretext that the activities of Dylan endanger its retirement, but it always ends up yielding, in the name of the friendship. Bloch has an assistant, Jekings, the " bobbie" most stupid of Scotland Yard (and surely of England). With each boob, Bloch threatens it to send it to direct circulation. When it puts its threat at execution, it is chaos in the streets of the English capital.

Dylan Dog has a certain number of other friends who appear in an irregular way. Among them, one finds inter alia:

Lord H.G. Wells , kind of insane scientist (in the positive direction of the term). It is the inventor of the " bad detector" who allows to measure the waves malvaillantes of a place. It appears for the first time in album 5 " gli uccisori" (killers). One finds it thereafter in a certain number of stories. Groucho hates it because Lord H.G. Wells treats it " majordome".
Mrs Trelkowsky is old a medium, very attached to Dylan. It often calls upon her to perceive messages of the " other monde". She sometimes also played a big role when it is Dylan itself which disappeared. She often receives at them her friends Glenda and Dora for scéances of spiritism endiablées. The character of Mrs Trelkowsky seems inspired of the Russian medium of the 19th century Helena Petrovna Blavatsky. One finds it inter alia in albums 143 and 206.
Lord Chester is a criminal imprisoned with the psychiatric hospital of Harleck, in which Dylan on many times the occasion to go during its investigations. Lord Chester with the practice to greet his/her friends in their jumping above and trying to strangle them, but Dylan has much sympathy to him. It appears for example in episodes 76 or 109.

Which is its enemies?

Dylan does not have many enemies who return: where there is a supernatural horror to overcome, you can bet that it will be there. It is necessary nevertheless to announce, at least, the skeletal figure encapuchonnée of Dead (which resembles that of the " Seventh seal " of Ingmar Bergman) and Doctor Xabaras (albums 1,25,43 and 100,241 and 242), insane scientist who seeks immortality and whose Dylan discovered to be the son. One can also retain horrible Killex (albums 80 and 129), clearly inspired of Hannibal Lecter. In the content, the worst enemy of Dylan is perhaps itself. Its attraction for the whole of the female gente plays to him sometimes of nasty tricks: do not judge a book by its cover, and those which finish in its bed play sometimes the mantes-nuns. In addition, Dylan has a certain number of phobias: the bat (and yes, for even is not infallible him), planes (it is practical when one lives on an island) and the vacuum…
