Duumvirs

Duumvirs , magistrates two, instituted in the ancient Rome for certain special, generally temporary functions.

One distinguished:

  • of the Duumvirs frumentaires , charged in Rome to distribute corn to the people; this function was assumed in a permanent way under the Empire by the Préfet of the annone, making useless the nomination of duumvirs frumentaires
  • of the Duumvirs builders , dedicators, charged with making build a temple or to make the colonial or municipal dedication
  • of it Duumvirs , higher magistrates of the colony S or Municipe S, which fulfilled the functions equivalent to those there of the Consul S of Rome and had the row of it.
  • of the Duumvirs quinquennial , duumvirs colonial or municipal, elected every five years, and carrying out then the functions of critic in their city (actualization of the lists of citizens, according to their row)
