Durgeon

The Durgeon is a French river which runs entirely in the department of Haute-Saône. It is an affluent of the the Saone out of left bank and thus tributary of a tributary of the the Rhone.

One should not confuse Durgeon, tributary the Saone with Drugeon, affluent of the Doubs.

Geography

Durgeon occurs with Genevrey (Haute-Saône) to 390 m of altitude, and adopts initially a north-eastern/south-western orientation.

Its Vallée is borrowed by the line the SNCF Paris-Basle.

It digs its bed between the hillocks of Montcey, Comberjon, Villeparois, Colombier, then between Coulevon, the Sabot and the Motte.

It bathes the town of Vesoul where it receives water of Colombine and the Bastard one.

From Vesoul, it takes the direction of the west, formerly was épanchait in a Marécage, occupied from now on by the Lac of Vaivre.

Shortly after it is thrown in the the Saone on the level of Chemilly to 207,50 m of altitude.

The population of the basin, 41.000 inhabitants, composes 59 communes. The landscape primarily consists of meadow S and Forêt S, except residential areas.

Hydrology

Durgeon is a rather abundant river, like all the rivers resulting from the north of the Franche-Comté. Its flow was observed over one 15 years period (1980-1994), with Pontcey, locality of the department of Haute-Saône little before its confluence with the the Saone. The catchment area of the river is there of 410 km ² (either it quasi totality of this last).

The interannual medium flow or module of the river with Pontcey is of 6,67 m ³ a second.

Durgeon present of the seasonal fluctuations of flow very marked, as very often in the east of France, with high waters of winter carrying the average monthly flow in a fork going from 8,4 to 12,6 m ³ a second, from December to April included (with an in December maximum). As of May, one attends a progressive fall of the flows to low waters of summer, from July to September included, movement accompanied by a fall of the monthly medium flow going up to 1,59 m ³ in August. But the fluctuations are much more marked over short periods and also according to the years.

With the low water level, the VCN3 can fall until 0,49 m ³, in the event of period quinquennial dry, which is rather low, but perfectly normal in this area of France. Let us recall that the VCN3 is the past minimal quantity or minimal flow over three days consecutive.

As for the risings, they can be rather important. Thus the QIX 2 and QIX 5 are worth respectively 55 and 62 m ³. The QIX 10 or calculated flow of decennial rising is of 67 m ³ a second and the QIX 20 of 72 m ³. As for the QIX 50, it was not calculated fault of duration of sufficient observation (see note).

Always in Pontcey, the recorded maximum instantaneous flow was of 76,2 m ³ a second on May 26th, 1983, while the value maximum day laborer was of 75 m ³ a second the same day. By comparing the first of these figures with the QIX of the river, one notes that this rising was of a vicennial nature, and thus at all exceptional.

Durgeon is an abundant river, supplied with such abundant precipitations they, on all the surface of its basin. The Lame of water past in its catchment area is of 515 millimetres annually, which high, largely higher than the overall average of France all basins is confused, and even slightly higher than the average of the basin of the Saone (501 millimetres in Lyon), but lower than the average of the totality of the basin of the Doubs (765 millimetres with Neublans-Abergement). The specific Flow of the river or Qsp reaches the robust figure of 16,3 liters a second and per square kilometer of basin.

October 25th, 1999, a Crue caused a Inondation valley of Durgeon and Colombine: the bridge of Coulevon was submerged, the carpark of the Hypermarché of Vesoul and the Entrepôt S Peugeot were flooded.

Fauna and flora

In the high part of Durgeon one finds spawning grounds with Truite S, green frog S, Brochet.

In upstream of Vesoul, the schools identified in 2000 of many Insecte S or Amphibien S:

  • Larva of Chironome
  • larva of young lady
  • larva of Dragonfly
  • the Limnée
  • the Notonecte
  • larva of Dytique
  • the transitory Gammare
  • larva of
  • the Leech
  • the Gerris
  • larva of Trichoptère (caddis-bait)
  • the Tadpole
  • larva of triton
  • the aselle
  • the Nèpe
  • the ranatre

Water quality

In 1998-1999, Durgeon is in an alarming medical condition:

  • upstream, due to the correction of the course, and the Plant health use of products S in agriculture
  • then affected by the discharge of the sewer S and the Liquid manure S
  • a situation degraded by the Purification plant of Vesoul.

Within the framework of the " contract of Durgeon" river; , an sensitization operation and of education to the environment is carried out by Franche-Comté Nature Environment, with the schools of the basin.
