History
Old Gallo-Roman city, Duravel, then named DIOLINDUM were based by the Romans to be a military station on the great strategic way from Bordeaux to Lyon. (Unfortunately, the vestiges of this time disappeared during the wars of religion from 1596.)With the XI° century, Duravel has a priory depend on the Abbey of MOISSAC founded by Clovis and restored by Charlemagne. The bodies of three Saints originating in Palestine and Egypt, Hilarion, Agathon and Poemon, are brought there. They are always in the church where since the XII° century, they are the object of pilgrimages and, every five years, of a festival of the ostension.
1369, “100 year old War”, Duravel is attacked by the English under the orders of Robert KNOLLES. City populated then of 6000 inhabitants, it resists during six weeks and puts the attackers in rout. In thanks, the king grants armorial bearings to him: Mouths, with a closed gold crown, the chief of azure, charged with three flowers of gold Lily.
