Duran Duran (1993 album)
Simply baptized Duran Duran , this album is the 7th album studio of Duran Duran. It is also known also under the name of Wedding album , to differentiate it from the album éponyme Duran Duran left in 1981. When this album is appeared, beginning 1993, the commercial future of Duran Duran seemed compromised. The group had just spent two years in the shade to be recorded, in the general indifference, which was going to become one of its most popular albums, being sold with nearly 7 million specimens in the world. A beautiful revenge on this " crossing of the désert" that the group had known after their blazing success of first half of the Eighties.
The tube " Ordinary World"
The magic of a made up song to old (in the tradition Beatles) was going to put fire at the powders as of the end of the year 1992, when the programmers of radios packed for the majestic " Ordinary world" : their passion was such as the recording company was going to be obliged to re-examine with the rise its sales strategy in favor of the group. " Ordinary world" would be n°6 in England and n°3 with the the United States. And signal 10 in very many countries.
Criticisms
The album received favorable criticisms, with the reason which the group had sharpened its talent of writing, which is indeed the case, in addition to the first individual one (rewarded by prestigious Ivor Novello Award), on songs like " Coil voodoo" , " Like undone" (another world tube) or " Sin off the city". The group had however already shown in the past its taste for the refined melodies and the engraved refrains.
A turning in the career of the group
On the plan of the sound, this album is characterized by a diversity with its paroxysm. The group hesitates between trott all guitars outside ( " Ordinary world" and " Like undone" ), the princely Funk ( " Shotgun" and " UMF" ) or the pop one of inspiration glam Rock'n'roll ( " Too much information" or " To whom it may concern" ). The production preserves however a tempting artisanal aspect. This collection of sometimes astonishing songs had two fundamental effects on the career of Duran Duran: he to offer a " like back" in the foreground, and to modify the image of the group, far from the universe of the " teeny pop bands" where criticisms for the majority had so obligingly exiled it.
