Duquesne Gardens
The Duquesne Gardens was a sporting enclosure of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania of first half of the 20th century.
History
Beginnings of the room
Created in 1890 as an automobile garage, the place is reconverted five years later at the cost of: 500000 dollars by Christopher Lyman Magee. Magee was the treasurer of the town of Pittsburgh and transforms the place into room multi-sport.In the first years, the room accommodates Rodeo S, matches of Boxe, the Cirque, diffusions of films or of the matches of Hockey. The first match of hockey takes place in the room on January 24th, 1899 between two teams of the town of Pittsburgh of which the team of hockey of the university.
The in Yellows Jackets (in French, yellow jerseys) are the players of the first equips officially organized city to play regularly in the room. When the team encounters financial problems, the owner, a former referee of hockey, Roy Schooley, sells the team to James F. Callahan. He re-elects the team in the honor of the team of Baseball of the city.
Pirates
The Pirates go their beginning within the National league of hockey the November 7th 1925 and the team becomes the third frankness based with the the United States to evolve/move in the League (after the Bruins of Boston and the Americans of New York). The first match of the frankness in the LNH takes place on December 2nd, 1925 and the Pirates incline themselves vis-a-vis the Americans of New York on the score of 2 goals to 1 in Prolongation. Lionel Conacher is the first striker of the history of the room in the LNH.In 1928, the financial problems force Callahan has to sell the team with a financial grouping but the results are not therefore with go and the following season is worst history of the Pirates with 36 defeats and 3 ties out of 44 meetings. In same time, the financial crisis of 1929 does not arrange the businesses and the new owners find themselves in their turn in the red. With a debt of almost: 400000 dollars, the team is moved with Philadelphia and becomes the Quakers of Philadelphia.
Hornets
The October 4th 1936 the frankness from the Olympics de Détroit is sold and transferred to Pittsburgh. The new frankness from the Hornets makes its beginnings within the American international League of hockey (which will become later the American Ligue of hockey) for the season 1936-37. The first match of Hornets is balanced on a victory 5 to 2 against the Barons de Cleveland. Hornets will gain twice the Coupe Calder, trophy ultimate of the LAH, while playing in Duquesne Gardens: in 1952 and 1955.In 1956, the skating rink is cut down and Hornets move then with Rochester to become the Americans of Rochester. A new frankness bearing the same name makes its return in the LAH in 1961, year of the inauguration of the new skating rink of the city, the Civic Arena.
