Dungannon

Dungannon (in Irish Dún Geanainn ) is a city of the Comté of Tyrone in Northern Ireland. It is the third plus big city of the county after Omagh and Strabane. The city counted 11.139 inhabitants at the time of the census of 2001.

History

With the beginning of the year 1600, Dungannon was the capital of Ireland because it was the official place of residence of King d' Irlande Hugh O' Neill.

One of the most famous people of the east city without question Thomas J. Clarke, the first signatory of the proclamation of independence of the Republic Irish (Poblacht Na hÉireann ace gaeilge) in 1916. Clarke was one of the main leaders of the rising of Easter 1916 and was carried out by the British authorities on May 3rd, 1916 at the 59 years age following rising. In homage the club of sports Gaelic of the city bears its name.

Census of 2001

Dunganon was classified among the medium-sized cities by the NISRA (Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency), i.e. having between 10.000 and 18.000 inhabitants. April 29th, 2001, day of the census, 11.139 people lived in Dungannon. Among them:
  • 24% was old of less than 16 years and 17.8% were old of more than 60 years.
  • 47.4% was men and 52.7% of the women
  • 57.6% regarded as catholic and 40.3% like Protestant.
  • 3.7% of the elderly from 16 to 74 years was with unemployment.

The city shelters the Dungannon RFC, club of Rugby champion of Ireland in 2001.
