Dunaliella salina
Dunaliella salina is a species of green alga Halophile that one can more particularly find in the saline Marais and the zones whose Salinité is average. Known for its antioxydant qualities, it is used in Cosmétique and in dietetic supplements. The organizations being able to survive under such conditions of salinity are very few. Resistance to the salt of this alga comes from the strong concentration of β-carotene which protects it from the light and the high percentages of Glycérol. These unfavorable conditions generate a osmotic pressure high that the alga manages to compensate.
It is at the origin of the pink color/red characteristic of the salt-water marshes.
History
Pline the Old one mentions the flos dirtied as being the best type of salt flower which produces a kind of oil, which, as surprising as that can appear, of grease even in salt… a kind of salt rust. The indication of the color lets think that it is about a salt flower containing Dunaliella salina . Pline adds that in containers, whiteness can be seen on the surface whereas the interior is wet . A saturated brine and glycerol pulp is suitable for deposit a layer of salt on the container when water evaporates. Flos dirtied was very widespread in the industry of the perfume of ancient Rome. According to Pline, it was partly because of the color but the glycerol which acted as a solvent, was even more interesting for perfumeries. In 1838, it is studied by the French Michel Felix Dunal close to Montpellier which gives him the name of Haematococcus salinus . It thus put a term at a discord which wanted that most of the color is produced by shrimps.
In 1905, the Roumanian E.C Teodoresco publishes a document describing with precision this alga, classified in a new kind: Dunaliella . Allemande Clara Hamburger is about to finish a similar report/ratio when she learns the existence from the searchs for Teodoresco. The alga was thereafter the object of many research intended to include/understand its tolerance with salt.
