Dumbarton Oaks

Dumbarton Oaks is a Private mansion located in the district of Georgetown at Washington, cd.. This site lodges the Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection , an information center on the Byzantine studies , pre-Colombians, like on the Town and country planning.

The private mansion was built in 1800 in the Style federal and bought in 1920 by Robert Woods Bliss (1875 - 1962), member of the Foreign Service American.

During their existence, M and Mrs. Bliss gathered there important collections of objects and books. In 1940, the collection, the house and the ground were the object of a donation in order to create the Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection , whose management was entrusted to the Université of Harvard. At the origin, the institution was interested only in the Byzantine studies.

The library of Dumbarton Oaks has more: 100000 volumes. The institution accommodates several researchers resident and grants each year forty purses to destinations of researchers visitors.

Four hectares of Garden S one drawn over the period 1922 - 1947 by the architect Beatrix Farrand. They are composed of the following parts: Star Garden, Green Garden, Beech Terrace, Urn Terrace, formal Pink Garden, Arbor Terrace, Fountain Terrace, Lover' S Lane Pool, and Pebble Terrace, like the CAMELIA Circle, Prunus Walk, Hill Cherry, Crabapple Hill, Forsythia Hill, and Fairview Hill. The gardens are opened with the public.

In 1944, the private mansion lodged the Conférence of Dumbarton Oaks, international meeting which posed the bases of the the United Nations.

Igor Stravinski wrote the Concerto Dumbarton Oaks in 1938, at the request of Robert Bliss.
