Duke of Richelieu
The title of duke of Richelieu , Even of France, was created the November 26th 1629 for the cardinal of Richelieu.
This one, being ecclesiastic, could not transmit it to its descendants but obtained that it passed to elder from its great nephews, Armand Jean de Vignerot, grandson of his older sister Francoise (1577 - 1615), who had married Rene de Vignerot, lord of Pontcourlay († 1625). Armand Jean de Vignerot added to his name that of the cardinal (of Plessis), took his weapons ( money with three rafters of mouths “without meslange of aulcunes others”) and accepted the title of the duke of Richelieu and the peerage of France by letters patent in 1657.
Two new reversions took place in 1822 and 1879. Indeed, Armand Emmanuel of Plessis, duke of Richelieu died without heir but obtained that the title of duke of Richelieu passes to the son of his Simplicie half-sister, born from Antoine-Pierre of the Vault of Midsummer's Day de Jumilhac, with reversion in the descent of his/her younger brother for the case where he would die without male heir, which occurred indeed, the title passing then to its nephew. The title is extinct in 1952.
