Duke of Norfolk

The title of duke of Norfolk was creates three times in the Pairie of England. It is currently the oldest title of duke remaining in British peerages.

The first title of duke of Norfolk was creates in 1397 for the Mowbray family. It died out in 1476 with the fourth duke. The title was recreates second once in 1477 for Richard de Shrewsbury, son-in-law of the last duke and wire of Edouard IV, but extinct again with its death in 1483. The title was recreates last once in 1483 for John Howard, grandson of the first duke Mowbray. After many vicissitudes, due in particular to the fact that the Howard family members remained catholic vis-a-vis a Protestant monarchy, the title is carried today by its descendant and eighteenth duke Edward FitzAlan-Howard.

Since the 14th century, the function of count-marshal of England is attached under duke of Norfolk. It ensures its owner a seat with the House of Lords. The current one also has the titles of Count d' Arundel, of Count de Surrey, Count de Norfolk, baron Beaumont, baron Malatravers and baron FitzAlan off Clun, all in the peerage of England and baron Howard off Glossop in the Pairie of the United Kingdom.

  • 1786 - 1815  : Charles Howard (1746 - 1815)  ;
  • 1815 - 1842  : Bernard Edward Howard (1765 - 1842)  ;
  • 1842 - 1856  : Henry Charles Howard (1791 - 1856)  ;
  • 1856 - 1860  : Henry Granville Fitzalan-Howard (1815 - 1860)  ;
  • 1860 - 1917  : Henry Fitzalan-Howard (1847 - 1917)  ;
  • 1917 - 1975  : Bernard Marmaduke Fitzalan-Howard (1908 - 1975)  ;
  • 1975 - 2002  : Miles Francis Fitzalan-Howard (1915 - 2002)  ;
  • since 2002  : Edward William Fitzalan-Howard (born in 1956)  ;
Heir apparent  : Henry Fitzalan-Howard Miles, count d' Arundel (born in 1987).
