Duke of Modena
The title of duke of Modena was created in 1452 by the emperor Frederic III for the Italian family of Este, whose members were lords of Ferrare, and were also created dukes of Reggio then dukes of Ferrare in 1471. In 1597, the duchy of Ferrare was incorporated in the Papal States, Este remaining dukes of Modena and Reggio until in 1796. In this date, the two duchies were incorporated in the République cispadane created by Napoleon Bonaparte.
In 1814, the Duché of Modena was restored with the profit of the house of Habsbourg, the archduke Ferdinand of Habsbourg-Lorraine-Este (1754 - 1806) having married the last princess of Modena of the house of Este, Marie-Beatrice d' Este (1750 - 1829), until its annexation by Piedmont-Sardinia in 1859.
Starting from 1815, the dukes of Modena obtained moreover the title of duke of Mirandole and, starting from 1829, that of duke of Massed and prince de Carrare .
