Duke of Medinaceli

The title of Duc of Medinaceli is one of most important of Spain. The current duchess of Medinaceli is eighteenth in title, Victoria Eugenia Fernández de Córdoba there Fernández de Henestrosa.

History

Its origin goes back to the infants of Cerda, which were the children of the oldest son of Alphonse X the Wise one and which died before his/her father. The puîné son of the king Sanche IV usurped the throne and of her line is resulting the Spanish royal family. This dynastic question generated a conflict which was solved only at the 14th century after the wars of succession, time to which was given to the descendants by the women (Isabel of Cerda, marries of Bernal de Bearne) the title of counts of Medinaceli, title that at the 15th century, the catholic Kings converted into Duc.

The dukes of Medinaceli had a single privilege by which no other ecu could face his. This is the reason for which, with Madrid, the palate of the Ducs of Villahermosa had his frontage directed towards the Zorrilla hold and not towards Will square of San Jerónimo where the Medinaceli family until in 1910 resided, year when them residence was demolished to be replaced by the Palace hotel.
