Duke of Gloucester
The title of duke of Gloucester is a title of the Pairie of the United Kingdom often conferred on the one of wire of the reigning monarch. The first four creations were in the Pairie of England, and the following one in the Pairie of Great Britain.
The dukes of this creation hold the subsidiary titles of Count d' Ulster and baron Culloden .
History of the title
The first creation (1385)
- 1385 - 1397 : Thomas de Woodstock (1355 - 1397). 5th wire of Edouard III of England.
The second creation (1414)
- 1414 - 1447 : Humphrey of Lancaster (1391 - 1447), Count de Pembroke. 4th wire of Henri IV.
The third creation (1461)
- 1461 - 1483 : Richard of York (1452 - 1485). Brother of Edouard IV. Richard III in 1483 became king.
The fourth creation (1659)
Dukes of Gloucester and Edinburgh (1764)
- 1764 - 1805 : William Henri of Hanover (1743 - 1805). Brother of George III ;
- 1805 - 1834 : William Frederick of Hanover (1776 - 1834). Wire of the precedent.
The fifth creation (1928)
- 1928 - 1974 : Henri de Windsor (1900 - 1974). Wire of George V ;
- since 1974 : Richard de Windsor (born 1944). Wire of the precedent.
Heir apparent : Alexander Patrick Gregers Richard Windsor, Count d' Ulster (born the October 24th 1974)
