Duke of Fitz-James

The duchy of Fitz-James (the prononer with the Frenchwoman: fitz-jamme ) is a Duc He peerage French created for the marshal of Berwick in 1710.

The marshal Jacques Fitz-James, was an illegitimate son of the king Jacques II of England and Arabella Churchill ( Fitz is a medieval term meaning the son, and particularly the illegitimate son). His/her father conferred to him the title of duke of Berwick in the Pairie of England. After the Glorious Revolution of 1688 which drove out Jacques II of the throne, Berwick put at the service Louis XIV. It was made Marshal of France in 1703.

Its services in the War of succession of Spain where it was illustrated like one of the best generals to the service of France, were worth to him the Spanish duchy of Liria there Jérica (1707) and the French duchy of Fitz-James (March 23rd 1710).

This one had like characteristic to be intended not to the oldest son of the marshal, who took again the duchies of Berwick and Liria there Jérica, but for his junior Henry James by Fitz-James.

  5. 1805 - 1838: Edouard of Fitz-James (1776 - 1838), 5th duke of Fitz-James, wire of the precedent.
  6. 1838 - 1846: Jacques Marie Emanuel of Fitz-James (1803-1846), 6th duke of Fitz-James, wire of the precedent.
  7. 1846 - 1906: Edouard Antoine Sidoine of Fitz-James (1828-1906), 7th duke of Fitz-James, wire of the precedent.
  8. 1906 - 1944: Jacques Gustave Sidoine of Fitz-James (1852-1944), 8th duke of Fitz-James, wire of the precedent.
  9. 1944 - 1967: Jacques de Fitzjames (1886-1967), 9th and last duke of Fitz-James.
