Duke of Beaufort

The title of duke of Beaufort was carried at the same time in the French nobility and the English nobility.

French dukes of Beaufort

July 6th 1597, Gabrielle d' Estrée, marchioness of Heaps, mistress of the king Henri IV, acquired duchess of Own way, heiress of the Maison of Foix, the county of Beaufort and all its dependences.

Henri IV joins together the county of Beaufort to the baronnie of Jaucourt and set up them in duchy-peerage in favor of César de Bourbon, duke of Vendôme, his natural son.

In 1688, the duchy was sold for 460.000 books by the third duke with Charles Ier Frederic of Montmorency-Luxembourg (1662 - 1726), which was created the same year duke of Beaufort (not par). The duchy was renamed “duchy of Montmorency” by letters patent of October 1689.
