Duke of Aumont

The Duchy - Peerage of Aumont is a French duchy, set up in 1665, starting from Marquisat of Isles-in-Champagne. The armorial bearings of the dukes of Aumont are " of money to the rafter of mouths accompanied by 7 sand merlettes, 4 as a chief and 3 at a peak, these dernères badly ordonnées".

The lords d' Aumont are a noble and old family which, during a great number of years, was in possession of the load of first gentleman of the room of the king. The most known characters of this family are:

  • Jean VI of Aumont, known as the Gallic Franc (1552-1595), Marshal of France, which was distinguished under Henri III and Henri IV, and perishes of a blow of snap hook with Camper close to Rennes, as a combatant the Duc of Mercœur, one of the chiefs of the Ligueurs;

  • Its grandson was the first duke of Aumont: Antoine d' Aumont de Rochebaron (1601-1669), marquis of Villequier, Isle, Nolay and Caps and baron d' Estrabonnes, then duke of Aumont (1665 - creation) and Even of France. Captain of the Bodyguards of the King, Marshal of France, it contributed much to the profit of the Bataille of Rethel in 1650. He had the stick of marshal for reward, and died in 1669
  • Louis-Marie-Victor d' Aumont (1632-1704), one of the most dedicated servants of Louis XIV: he was distinguished in the countryside from Flanders; he contributed much to the advances in knowledge of the medals and was member of the Academy of the inscriptions. He married on November 21st, 1660, Madeleine girl of Michel Tellier,
  • Alexandre d' Aumont, known by his devotion to Louis XVI: this last supported the escape from the king;
  • Celestial Louis of Aumont, gentleman of the room under Louis XVIII, who made in 1815, during the Hundred Days, a descent in Normandy and seized Bayeux and Caen.
