Duel in the Pacific

Duel in the Pacific ( Hell in the Pacific ) is an American film carried out by John Boorman, left in 1968.

Synopsis

During the Second world war in the Peaceful , a killed American aviator fails on an island already occupied by a Japanese sailor. Each one will try to take possession of the island. Finally, they will build together a raft and will join a camp in ruins. But from the photographs of tortured soldiers and more generally their cultural differences will call in question their mutual co-operation.

There exist two final sequences with film:

First end: Whereas the tension between the two protagonists is with his roof, a bombardment occurs and kills them both.

Second end: Whereas the tension between the two protagonists is with his roof, both set out again each one on their side…

Concerning film

  • the film was turned for four months in the Palaos, between the Filipino and the New Guinea. Only a short synopsis was used as a basis for the intrigue, the natural decoration being used then as inspiration during turning itself.
  • the film exists with fine an alternative (which is being the initial end of John Boorman). The producers judged that it was not spectacular enough and decided to cut the final discussion to assemble a Stock-shot of explosion. Explosion under hearing that following a bombardment the two protagonists found death. Here original end: After the insults, American recovers his businesses and his backpack. Japanese gives in silence his military uniform. The two men throw a last glance: heinous for American and killed for Japanese. American leaves the base and Japanese leaves back and leaves the framework leaving an empty chair and a clock…
  • the idea of Boorman was " to play a turn with the industrie" by making a silent film. The first part of film is indeed without any elaborate dialog.
  • Toshirô Mifune was engaged with the request express of Lee Marvin, which was a large admiror of the Japanese actor.
  • Mifune speaking a word about English, turning with John Boorman was hardly facilitated by it. Lee Marvin benefitted from it to learn with its partner some (large) English words.
  • During turning, there be a certain pressure on the realizer to turn a violent confrontation between Marvin and Mifune. The film did not contain any physical combat between the two enemies. Boorman introduced two mental images or the protagonists see, one after the other, their clean dead. Boorman will declare many years later that the film would be better without this short scene… This sequence, obviously, was used to sell film since it will be found in the band announces.
  • the film became a kind of traditional (nonofficial) of the Histoire of the cinema.
  • the film with the characteristic to have only two actors in all and for all, a common point shared with the Sleuthhound of Joseph L. Mankiewicz (1972).
