the Castle of the Coppice to the hamlet Saint-Paul
Some of the most beautiful trees of the area radiate in the park of the castle of the Coppice. Thus the direction of “the remarkable tree”, takes here any root there, through the most beautiful gasolines such as the Giant sequoia, the Tulipier of Virginia, the Cèdre of the Atlas,… Strewn with solid masses, platebandes, and dependences such as the Orangery in temple gréco-Roman or the stables built in a vault of the 16th century, all the symbolic system and the spirit of the parks of the 18th century are established there.
-
In the stables of the castle of the Coppice is installed since June 2004 the Musée August 44 “the hell on the Seine”: the Battle of Normandy, one knows it only too little, finished on banks of the Seine. At the end of August 1944, are tens of thousands of German soldiers who try to flee the projection of the Allies, but the bridges and vats destroyed in edge of the Seine slow down their retirement.
The Anglo-Canadian armies victoriously fight the last bastions of German defense, leading them thereafter to the so much awaited release of the civil populations. The purpose of this museum is thus to recall these tragic hours of combat then these hours of relief of the release. Thanks to the accounts of the soldiers, civilians, all witnesses of these terrible combat; and through thousands of objects, armaments and behaviors of soldiers, it is possible to better include/understand the history of the last combat on the Seine.
