Shiing-shen Chern (陳省身; Pinyin: Chén Xǐngshēn; October 26th 1911 - December 3rd 2004) was a Mathématicien Chinese, and naturalized American, considered as one of the best specialists in the differential Topologie and the differential Géométrie at the 20th century.

Remark of pronociation: its real name is rather " chen" ; but the writing " chern" is a Roman transcription of which the " r" does not decide and indicates a tonic syllable of Mandarin.

Childhood

Chern was born with Jiaxing in the province from Zhejiang. It joined his father with Tianjin in 1922, and began its studies with the Université of Nankai. It was student with the Université of Tsinghua of 1931 to 1934, working on the differential Géométrie and the projective Géométrie.

European studies

In 1934, then 23 years old, Chern left China to settle with Hamburg to finish its doctoral studies until 1936, working with Wilhelm Blaschke on the theory of Cartan-Khäler. In 1936-37, he studied near Elie Cartan with Paris before turning over to Beijing as professor.

Life in the United States

In 1943, Chern settled with the IAS (Institute for Advanced Study) with Princeton, studying the characteristic classes in differential topology.

Of return to Shangai in 1946, it founded off the Mathematical Institute Academia Sinica.

He became professor with the Université of Chicago in 1949.

He moved at the University of California in 1960. He obtained American nationality the following year. He founded the MSRI in 1981, and was the director until 1984. Shiing-Shen Chern became foreign member of the Royal Society the June 27th 1985

In 1985, it founded the Institut of mathematics of Nankai to Tianjin where it died in 2004, with old 93 years.

Seek

Its work is fundamental in differential Géométrie. One owes him the Théorie of Chern-Simons. It published results in integral Géométrie, and on the minimal varieties. In the continuation of work of Elie Cartan, it was interested in the method of the mobile Repère.

Chern suggested that the metric of Finsler would play a central role in mathematics of the 21e century.
